Obituary of Leonard Kurello

Please share a memory of Leonard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Leonard John Kurello, a man of unwavering faith and dedication to his family, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at his residence in Forest at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by Sabina Helen Kurello, his beloved wife of 70 years. Born on August 25, 1927, in Wilkes-Barre, PA, Leonard was the youngest of six children of the late Phillip M. Kurello and Genevieve Szalkucki Kurello. He proudly served his country in the US Navy during World War II, demonstrating his commitment to duty and honor at an early age. Leonard dedicated much of his life to civil service, retiring from the federal government after a long and successful career as a procurement agent. He was a proud alumnus of Wilkes University and imprinted the importance of education upon all his four children. He was a man of strong moral and catholic values, and a dutiful servant of Christ. The Lee Park neighborhood lost a dependable mechanic and handyman when, 20 years after retirement from Tobyhanna Army Depot, Len and Sabina were blessed to move to Spring Meadow Farm in Forest, VA where their quality of life excelled. He tremendously enjoyed riding his four-wheeler around the property, often with a dog or even a cat on board, embracing the freedom and beauty of the land. He also had a passion for motorcycles, riding them with enthusiasm until the age of 85. A skilled and conscientious man, Leonard was known for his ability to fix anything and was always willing to lend a helping hand to friends and family. His talents extended to the card table, where he could easily best opponents with his sharp mind and quick wit. The fact that he won the last game of cards he ever played in a game of pitch against his son-in-law was a testament to his competitive spirit and sharp mind. Despite his many talents and achievements, Leonard remained humble and devoted to his Catholic faith. He was a dedicated member of the Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church, where his faith provided him with strength and guidance through the years. Leonard is survived by his four children, Dr. Leonard J. Kurello, Jr. (Vonda), Dr. Phillip J. Kurello (Debora), Brittney M. Kurello,L.Ac., and Dr. Anastasia Katany (Joe), as well as six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. In addition to his wife Sabina, he was preceded in death by siblings, Helen Graves, Jean Van Wicklen, Stacia Moore, Henry Kurello and Dr.Ed Kurello, 13 Brothers-in-law, and all of his neighbors from his former Lee Park neighborhood. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him, and his legacy of love and devotion will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, February 23, 2024 at the Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church. Leonard will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Sabina, at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
