Obituary of Mark A. Chackan

Retired 1st Sergeant Mark A. Chackan,64, of Edwardsville passed away Tuesday, August 24,2021 at Allied Hospice Unit, Wilkes-Barre. Mark was born, February 7, 1957. He was the son of Joanne Baroody Gavlick (South Carolina) and the late Andrew Chackan. Upon graduating from Wyoming Valley West High School, Mark proudly served as a paratrooper in the US Army, 82nd Airborne. Mark also served with the Pennsylvania National Guard in the 109th infantry division in Plymouth, and the 103rd Armor Division in Tamaqua PA. He proudly served his country for 23 years. Mark was also a retired production team leader at Gatorade/Quaker Oats, Mountaintop, PA. Mark was preceded in death by; infant daughter, Alison Marie Chackan; Goddaughter and niece, Jessica Lynn Helfrich; nephew, Reno DiGiacomo; and in-laws, John and Joan Simon. Mark is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie (Simon): daughter, Angela (Luke) Schappert of Phillipsburg, NJ; grandsons, Aidan and Owen Schappert; and his adoring Furry Grandpuppy, Desta; sisters-in-law, Donna (Ted) Zieba; Tracee (Joe) Katchko; Sisters, Andrea (John) DiGiacomo; Georgene (Steve) Carullo; Maria (Bill) Richar; and Brother, Andy (Barbara) Chackan; nieces and nephews, Amanda Zieba, Godson John Katchko, Tony (Kendra) Katchko, Michael Boyle, Jenna Chackan, Garrett Richar; and great niece, Dawn Celestine Katchko. Mark was a lifelong fan of the Los Angeles Rams, enjoyed fishing, playing solitaire, and spending time with his family. Mark will forever be missed by his loved ones. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday August 28th, 2021 at 10 AM in St. Robert Bellarmine Church at 143 Division Street Wilkes-Barre, Pa 18702. Everyone is asked to go Directly to Church on Saturday Morning. Interment will be in Saint Casimir’s Lithuanian Cemetery, Old Tavern Road in Muhlenburg.
